Komodo National Park: choose islands and activities before a boat

The choice. Komodo is an Indonesian national park made up of islands and surrounding marine habitats, not a single road-access lookout. The UNESCO property includes Komodo, Rinca and Padar among its best-known islands. A visitor interested in dragon habitat, the Padar viewpoint or an activity at sea must compare different landings and boat routes. An attractive photograph of Padar does not show the place where every tour meets a guide.

Boat itinerary and conservation rules

The park authority publishes current visitor information, including a visit protocol and ticket and carrying-capacity notices. Confirm the island, landing point, permitted activities and fees for your date with both the authority and a licensed operator. Capacity rules can change; this guide intentionally does not quote a universal daily quota or a single park-opening time.

UNESCO identifies strong currents as a factor in the surrounding marine environment. Do not assume that swimming or snorkelling is safe or allowed wherever a boat pauses. Weather and sea conditions also change travel between islands. If an operator advertises multiple stops in one day, ask which are actually included and what happens if a landing is cancelled.

Seeing wildlife responsibly

The Komodo dragon is a wild animal, not an attraction to approach for a close photograph. Follow the park's current ranger and visitor protocol at the specific island; do not infer a safe distance from old travel articles. The park also protects reefs and other habitats, so do not treat it as a land-animal photo stop with disposable marine surroundings.

This page gives orientation rather than a promised departure port or fixed itinerary. Use the official park map and current operator details to identify your actual meeting point and island sequence. The credited photograph is of Padar in 2025, not a map of all park access.
